Let's Reduce Food Waste Together!

HCW, along with our friends at After the Harvest and NourishKC, recently hosted a screening of WASTED! The Story of Food Waste at the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library. We learned about what giants in the restaurant industry are doing about the global food waste problem, and what we as individuals can do about it too. Watch the trailer here!

Want to do more? Look No Further! Here are some ways you can get involved today:

  • Our community partners are always looking for volunteers
    • Go gleaning! - After the Harvest has regular opportunities to go to local farms and harvest food for donation.
    • Help out at a community kitchen! - NourishKC serves breakfast and lunch to hundreds of KC residents every week.
  • Start composting
    • There are several community gardens that also have a compost pile. Find your friendly neighborhood garden here
    • You can also start composting at home - it may seem daunting at first, but you can find helpful tips here.

The Food Systems Action Team believes that a strong, healthy food system is vital to ensuring the health of KCK residents.

The food system includes every aspect of food from growing and production to what happens with the scraps from your plate after dinner. Unfortunately, the United States wastes around 133 billion pounds of food every year, and food waste is one of the leading contributors to green house gas emissions.

But we are here to help.

We've provided some quick and easy tips to save you money, and help save the planet, too!
